Duration – 4 Day/3 Night

Day 1

You will be picked up from your accommodation in Kuching at about 08.30 hrs by air-conditioned van for the trip to Batang Ai reservoir situated about 4 1/2 hours away. You will travel through rural Sarawak, passing pepper gardens, cocoa and rubber plantation.

Along the way, you will make a stop at Lachau Bazaar. Stroll around the shops and the small native market and keep an eye out for a variety of jungle produce such as edible ferns, bamboo shoots and unusual tropical fruit. You will also visit a pepper garden and stop by to view wild orchids and several species of pitcher plants.Take lunch enroute. The journey continues until arrive at Batang Ai Lake around 13.30-14.00 hrs.

Upon arrival at the Batang Ai reservoir, proceed by longboat about 1 to 2 hours upriver to Nanga Sumpa which is located on the Delok River, planning to arrive around 15.30 hrs. The exact arrival time will depend on river conditions. Nanga Sumpa is recognised as one of the region’s best examples of village based tourism. Michael Palin of Monty Python fame, has also been a visitor to the lodge at Nanga Sumpa Longhouse.

Settle in at the jungle lodge. the accommodation is in a separate lodge to the village Longhouse, which provides simple, clean lodging with Western style toilets, mosquito netting, mattresses and clean linen. The meals are prepared in the lodge and feature fresh jungle vegetables and other local delicacies.
The longhouse is situated just by the banks of the river and upon arrival, the village headman or one of his people will welcome you to the longhouse. The Iban are legendary when it comes to good hospitality and you will be immediately made welcome to their home. You can hold conversations with them through your guide, and learn their way of life and maybe even experience some of it for yourself. You can also take a stroll on the grounds and take in the simple, relaxed lifestyle that is longhouse living.

After dinner proceed to Nanga Sumpa longhouse across the river. Relax on the ruai (common verandah) and spend time with the Iban people of the village. Interact with the community; learn about their culture and enjoy some local rice wine. Overnight at Nanga Sumpa Lodge. [Lunch and Dinner included]

Day 2
Following breakfast, hike the jungle trails along the river. Continue upriver by longboat. Your destination is the scenic Enseluai Waterfall. Along the way (if conditions are suitable) your boatman may stop to demonstrate fishing Iban-style using a jala or throw net. Arrive at the waterfall where you will have time to relax, swim and enjoy the rainforest surroundings. Enjoy a riverside BBQ lunch prepared by your Iban hosts.

At around 13.30-14.00 hrs you will proceed by boat (approx. 15 mins) to the junction of the Delok and Lalang Rivers. Then trek for 1-2 hours along a rainforest trail through orang-utan habitat and arrive at Lubok Kasai jungle camp which is located on the banks of the Lalang River. Settle in at Lubok Kasai. Relax and swim in the river or just enjoy the rainforest surroundings. You can help your guides by gathering jungle produce like bamboo shoots or edible ferns for the evening meal.Orang-utans are occasionally seen (at dusk or at dawn) in this area. After dinner spend a quiet evening at the lodge and enjoy the tranquility of the forest. Alternatively go on a short (30 mins or so) night walk near the lodge (weather permitting). Day 3

After breakfast depart the camp at around 08.30-09.00 hrs, and follow one of the rainforest trails in the area to look for orang-utans and other wildlife like the pig-tailed macaque, hornbills and other variety of birds. While the orang-utans are only occasionally seen, their nests and feeding area can often be observed along the trails.

Return to Lubok Kasai around 12.00-13.00 hrs. You will have lunch at the camp. The remainder of the afternoon is free at leisure. Go for a swim in the river or relax in the rainforest surroundings.

At 16.00 hrs, depart on a 1-2 hour walk along a trail that follows the Lalang River in search of orang-utans.

Note: Leeches are found in this area. Insect repellent is effective against leeches, as is talcum powder on your legs, or leech socks. The morning trek on day 3 takes approximately 3-4 hours, depending on fitness level. An alternative, shorter trek along the Lalang river can also be arranged if you prefer.

Day 4

Following breakfast in the lodge, depart down river by longboat to the Batang Ai Lake jetty, arriving around 10.30-11.00 hours.Then travel overland back to Kuching with lunch en route. You will arrive in Kuching at approx. 16.30 hrs and will be dropped off at your hotel. [Breakfast, and Lunch included]

Note: Weather conditions and the water level of local rivers may force our guides to modify the tour in the interests of safety. For example, some trekking activities are not possible during heavy rain or a thunderstorm. No refunds will be offered if a trek is cancelled or boat transfer delayed due to bad weather or river conditions.
