The Grand Old Lady on Canada Hill

You will be picked up from your Miri accommodation. The city tour will start with a drive to Canada Hill overlooking the city. You will be briefed on the historical development of Miri City, which developed rapidly from a small village in the 1800s to the very cosmopolitan and modern city that it is today. This has been largely due to the influence of oil discovery when Malaysia’s first oil well was spudded by Shell in 1910. This oil well now known as The Grand Old Lady and sits as a relic on Canada Hill. Driving down to the seashore, share the secrets of success of the industrialists of Miri, as your guide points out at their magnificent villas.

 

Native market at Miri

Continue your tour to the Taoist Temple – San Chin Tien, Miri City Fan – an award winning urban park complex. A few streets away, you will find the Tamu Khas – the native market or “Tamu”. As you walk among the stalls of this colourful market, you will be introduced to a variety of edible local vegetables, fruits and foods brought in by the natives from the jungle, and local farmers from around Miri.

View over Miri from Canada Hill

Kuala Baram Crocodile Farm is the largest in the Northern region of Sarawak. It is home to over 1000 Estuarine Crocodile (Crocodylus Porosus) and Malayan Gharial (Tomistoma Schlegelii) in a 22 acres land-scaped setting with natural breeding enclosure man-made sanctuary ponds specially carved out for the reptiles.

You will be able to safely view an amazing collection of crocodiles up close. 

After the Crocodile farm visit, you will continue on to the  Miri City Tour, which includes  a visit to Malaysia’s first  Oil Well or The Grand Old Lady, located at Canada Hill, the Taoist Temple – San Ching Tien which is the largest Taoist temple in S.E. Asia, Miri City Fan – an award winning urban park complex comprising a variety of theme gardens, including a botanical garden and an Islamic garden. The garden is also home to Miri City Library, and a large amphi-theatre where concerts are frequently held.

You will also make a stop at Miri Heritage Centre – a local handicraft and souvenir centre, and Tamu Khas – the native market, where all the stalls sell various tropical fruit and vegetable.

Return to your hotel later in the afternoon. [Includes lunch]
