Day 1

Depart Kuching by air-conditioned van for Batang Ai reservoir situated about 4 1/2 hours away. You will travel through rural Sarawak, passing pepper gardens, cocoa and rubber plantation. En-route, a few stops will be made. Visit the colourful native market in Serian town where a variety of jungle produce such as edible ferns, bamboo shoots and unusual tropical fruit are on display. Visit a pepper garden and stop by to view wild orchids and several species of pitcher plants.

A stop will be made for lunch en route (lunch not included in price). Upon arrival at the Batang Ai reservoir, travel upriver  by longboat (about 1 1/2 hours)  to Nanga Sumpa longhouse. Settle in at the longhouse lodge (located across the river from the main longhouse). After dinner you will be able to visit Nanga Sumpa longhouse. Relax on the ruai (common verandah) and spend time with the Iban people of the village. Interact with the community; learn about their culture and enjoy some local rice wine. Overnight stay at Nanga Sumpa lodge.  [includes lunch and dinner]

Day 2


After breakfast, hike the jungle trails along the river. You will then continue upriver by longboat. Your destination is the scenic Enseluai waterfall. Along the way (if conditions are suitable) your boatman may stop to demonstrate fishing Iban-style using a jala or throw net. Arrive at the waterfall – you will have time to relax, swim and enjoy the rainforest surroundings. Enjoy a riverside BBQ lunch prepared by your Iban hosts.

Around 14.00 hours, proceed by boat to the junction of the Delok and Lalang Rivers – about a  15 minute trip. Then trek for 1-2 hours along a rainforest trail through orang-utan habitat and arrive at Lubok Kasai jungle camp which is located on the banks of the Lalang River. Settle in at Lubok Kasai. Relax, have a swim in the river or just enjoy the rainforest surroundings.  Orang-utans are occasionally seen around  dusk and/or  dawn in this area.  After dinner spend a quiet evening at the lodge and enjoy the tranquility of the forest. Alternatively, you could go on a short 30 minute night walk near the camp (weather permitting). Overnight at Lubok Kasai jungle camp.

Day 3

After breakfast you will head off on a trek on one of the rainforest trails to look for orang-utans and other wildlife such as pig-tailed macaques, hornbills and a variety of birds. While orang-utans are only occasionally spotted, their nests are often seen along the trails. Return to Lubok Kasai around 1200-1300 hours for lunch at the camp.

The remainder of the afternoon is free at leisure. Go for a swim in the river or relax in the rainforest surroundings.  At about 16.00 hours depart on a 1-2 hour walk along a trail which follows the Lalang River in search of orang-utans.

Note: The morning trek on day 3 takes approximately 3-4 hours, depending on fitness level. An alternative, shorter trek along the Lalang river can also be arranged, if you prefer.

Day 4


Following breakfast depart down river by longboat, then overland to Kuching. A stop for lunch will be made en-route. Continue to Kuching and drop off at your hotel, or transfer to the airport for your departure flight. [breakfast and lunch included]

Note: Weather conditions and the water level of local rivers may force our guides to modify the tour in the interests of safety. For example, some trekking activities are not possible during heavy rain or a thunderstorm. No refunds will be offered if a trek is cancelled or boat transfer delayed due to bad weather or river conditions.

Note: The first night of the tour is based on a room in the “Ruai wing” of the Nanga Sumpa Lodge. The Ruai Wing has shared bathroom facilities.
