Continue the drive to Poring,  which lies about 40 km East of the park, at an altitude of about 450 metres. where you’ll get to walk around surrounded by  the tropical rainforests that leads up to the treetop canopy walkways, which are suspended up to 41 metres above the forest floor between giant Mengaris trees.

Enjoy lunch before visiting Kipungit Waterfall for a nice dip in its refreshing water, or take a rejuvenating soak in the steamy sulphur public pools at Poring. If weather permits, treat your feet to an unusual, but delightful fish spa at Moroli River, Luanti.

Overnight in Kundasang, or alternatively, at Hill Lodge near Kinabalu Park Headquarters (at a surcharge – refer to price schedule, below). [includes lunch and dinner]. Night temperature in the  park can vary from around 14 – 25 degrees C.

Day 2

After breakfast, head over to Kundasang War Memorial Park to learn about Sabah’s WWII history. From here you will also be able to get some great photos of the towering Mount Kinabalu (providing the weather permits).

From Kundusang  head  over to visit the Kinabalu Natural History Gallery and Mountain Garden at the Kinabalu Park Headquarters. The park is home to some of the 24 species of flowering Rhododendrons, 10 species of carnivorous pitcher plants, an estimated 1400 species of orchids, over 600 species of ferns, 40 species of oak trees and over 300 species of birds. Weather permitting, take a guided walk on one of the trails in the park to explore the cool montane forest.

The Memorial takes the form of a walled garden and it was built to honour all those who died on the death marches of the Second World War. The tragedy saw the loss of 2,500 prisoners-of-war (1,800 Australian and 700 British soldiers) between January to April 1945, as they marched from Sandakan to Ranau, a distance of 240 km. Only six escaped with the help of locals and survived the torturous trek across mountainous and forested terrain.
