This resort opened in mid-2012 and lies in the North-East of Gaya Island in Malohom Bay, only a 20 minute boat trip from the ferry terminal wharf in Kota Kinabalu.
The resort lies cradled on the hillside of the island in amongst the ancient rainforest and protected mangroves, with vines and creepers winding their way around the beams and piers supporting the accommodation units of the resort, softening the line of the engineering of the construction. One of the requirements for building in the area was that it was not permitted to excavate, which meant that all the buildings on the hillside sit above the ground or only lightly touch the ground.
Most accommodation units have views out over the water towards Kota Kinabalu. Many of the units on the hillside (the aptly named Kinabalu Villas) have views to Mt Kinabalu, which will entice you to rise early to catch a glimpse of the sun as it rises of the mountain.

ACCOMMODATION
Most of the 120 rooms afford a splendid view of the sea, forest, mangroves or beach. Beautifully furnished in restful earth colours and natural wood, each guest room is a compliment to the casually luxurious ambience at Gaya Island Resort.
SURIA SUITE
Perched on the sloping hillside, the luxurious 188 square metre two-bedroom suite elegantly occupies two levels and offers glorious uninterrupted views of the ocean and Mount Kinabalu from a large outdoor verandah with daybeds. The ground floor of the suite features a relaxing lounge area, private dining room, a TV room, a powder room and a pantry which opens out onto an outdoor deck. The suite’s first floor is completely dedicated to rest and relaxation. The two spacious bedrooms both come with separate en-suites, walk-in wardrobes and vanity areas. This haven of absolute luxury is completed by an outdoor bath that leads onto the suite’s private balcony which offers breathtaking views.
KINABALU VILLA
With views stretching across the South China Sea, and where the silhouette of Mount Kinabalu can be seen on a clear day, these Kinabalu Villas provide some of the best views in the resort.
CANOPY VILLA
Situated on a hillside amidst lush rainforest, the villas offer a peaceful setting with leafy views ranging from the rainforest canopy to the tropical mangroves. Connecting rooms are available for families.
BAYU VILLA
Set amongst a tropical mangrove on a gently sloping hillside, these villas offer a beautiful outlook and are in easy walking distance from the resort’s pristine sandy beach.

Note that access to some of the hillside villas may be difficult for people with mobility issues – please speak to our agents if this is the case, so that we can attempt to secure a villa in the lower area of the resort for you.
