This is an introduction to Brunei’s unique wilderness rainforest region, where numerous animals, birds and plant life thrive. This overnight tour permits a comfortable pace, and an opportunity to see local lifestyles. Accommodation in an air conditioned Guest house (rooms with private bathroom), near Bangar town.

BANGAR GUEST HOUSE – DOUBLE ROOM

Day 1The trip departs Bandar at 14.30 hrs, arriving at Bangar at approximately 15.15 hrs. You will arrive back in Bandar Seri Begawan at around 16.15 hrs the following day

Take a local water taxi from Bandar, through a network of narrow channels and rivers, around the back of Brunei Bay. Pass by dense mangrove islands and watch for wildlife along the way to Bangar, Temburong.

The afternoon includes visiting a local longhouse (Bn$2 per person donation required – please bring some small change), with its mix of traditional lifestyle and modern facilities.

Around 16.45 hrs, head off on a 2.5 hour evening River Safari in aluminium boats to see Proboscis monkeys, crocodiles, fireflies and other wildlife along the mangrove lined river.

Dinner in a local café before returning to the Guest house for a comfortable night.

Day 2An early start next morning allows travel by local longboat upstream, on the Temburong River, with the early morning mist rising from the river and jungle canopy. Animals and birds are more active at this time of the day. Look for Hornbills, butterflies, Proboscis Monkeys, Macaques and other wildlife. See Durian and other local fruiting trees (fruit will not be seen at all times of the year).

At Ulu Temburong National Park, explore the network of timber walkways built above the rainforest floor. Climb the 1200 steps to the base of the 60 m Canopy Walkway towers. Observe the jungle from in and above the trees. Watch the wildlife and enjoy the panoramic view.

Longboat on the river

LONGBOAT ON THE RIVER

River levels and time permitting, proceed further upstream on the Temburong River. Take a short (or long) walk along a jungle creek to a waterfall. Return downstream in the longboat or riding the optional Rapid Riders (heavy duty inflatable mattresses – optional extra charge Bn$15).Enjoy a lunch of local specialties beside the river. Swim, relax, shoot the rapids on the Rapid Riders, or walk along other jungle pathways.

Travel downstream by longboat (or the optional Rapid Riders – or 6 person inflatable raft – Bn$35 per person – minimum 3 people required) to Batang Duri, then vehicle transfer to Bangar town for afternoon tea with optional shopping and market visit; if time permits.

Return in covered local water taxi to Bandar Seri Begawan. You will arrive back in Bangar Seri Begawan around 16.15 hrs

(life jackets, helmets and other safety equipment are provided. This programme involves early starts, walks on long and sometimes slippery pathways, bumpy boat rides, getting wet, and clambering about. It is, however, well within the capabilities of normally healthy people)

The Rafting Option for the return trip is a fun experience with grade 1 or 2 rapids to add some thrills while paddling downstream from the National Park. The Temburong River is especially suited to beginners and families. Drift with the current, listen to the sounds of the jungle and watch for birds and other wildlife. Staff will brief you on the techniques and safety procedures. If you take the rafting option, you will not arrive back in Bandar Seri Begawan until approximately 17.30 hrs
